“Just do it.”
That is what Deb Cecotti will tell anyone who asks her about mentoring a Girls Hope scholar.
“It’s fun and it’s well worth your time,” Deb said of our mentoring program. “You will get more out of it than you put into it.”
Deb’s journey into mentoring began a few years after she retired. She discovered Girls Hope’s mentoring program while searching for opportunities to give back, and the more she learned, the more impressed she became. Deb instantly clicked with her mentee during her first match meeting, and the pair have been trying new activities together ever since.
“We have done some phenomenal things together,” Deb explained. “We went to see Panic! At The Disco, which is something I would have never done, myself. I have learned tons and tons from [my mentee] – she is so fun and incredible to be around.”
Deb and her mentee have embarked on a number of adventures together, including nights spent at the symphony and trips to Tekko. Next, the pair hopes to engage in a service opportunity together.
As Deb continues to broaden her mentee’s experiences, she says she hopes to teach her that the world is a wide open place, where anything can be accomplished. She wants her mentee to know that she can do anything she sets her mind to, and that there are no boundaries nor limits as to what she can achieve. However, Deb’s mentee isn’t the only one learning from their match.
“The most important thing I have learned from her is that young women now are so much bolder, braver, and more free,” Deb said of her mentee. “She is an incredible kid,” she added.
