Volunteer Opportunities
Girls Hope volunteers contribute in a number of ways that are flexible and accommodating to busy schedules. Please take a look at the volunteer positions available below, and if you are ready to begin volunteering at Girls Hope, contact Sandra McVeigh, AmeriCorps Volunteer Coordinator, at 724-869-6521 or SMcVeigh@bhgh.org.
Transportation
Volunteers assisting with transportation get the scholars where they need to go. Transportation volunteers can serve as strong role models even while driving scholars to soccer games, appointments, lessons, rehearsals, etc.
Dinner Helpers
Opportunities for dinner helpers include:
- Bringing a premade or purchased meal, and joining the scholars for a family style meal.
- Arriving early to engage the scholars in helping to prepare a meal. Stay to enjoy it, too!
- Purchasing or preparing a meal in advance and dropping it off at either our Baden or Coraopolis scholar house is a flexible option for those who may not be ready to obtain required clearances for volunteering within the home.
Dinner helpers work directly with the Girls Hope Residential Counselors to schedule the best times to share or drop off meals.
Residential Assistant
If you are the type of person who likes multi-tasking, doing administrative tasks and coordinating activities for a busy household of young people, our Residential Assistant volunteer position could be an excellent match for your interests.
Residential Assistants commit to volunteering two half-days per month (with flexible hours to meet the scheduling needs of volunteers). They interface directly with Girls Hope residential staff and scholars to provide them with assistance in both household and activity coordination/organization.
Being a Girls Hope Residential Assistant may at times involve transporting scholars and, therefore, requires a valid driver’s license, proof of automobile insurance and a three-year driver history report.
This opportunity represents an excellent way to gain volunteer experience in the field of children’s services and also requires a minimum six-month commitment. Volunteer applicants must be at least 21 years of age.
Mentoring
Our mentoring program supports positive, structured one-on-one relationships that pair a young person with a caring individual who offers trust, guidance and encouragement. Mentors and scholars meet for a minimum of 4 hours per month and aim to have fun while making positive choices. (A 12-month commitment is preferred.) Click here to learn more.
Music Tutors
We seek volunteer tutors in piano and voice who want to help the Girls Hope scholars to develop musical skills they can enjoy and share for a lifetime. In addition to obtaining clearances, prior teaching experience in piano and/or voice is required.
Subject Tutoring & Lessons
Girls Hope is education focused with the long-term goal of seeing our scholars succeed and graduate from college. We welcome volunteers who enjoy helping students excel in their studies. We have opportunities for foreign language (often Spanish), general and subject-specific tutoring.
Talent Sharing
Consider sharing your talents and interests with the scholars! Whether you’re a fitness guru, board game enthusiast, dietician or artist, we welcome special presentations and hobby sharing.
Internships
Girls Hope offers internships for senior-level college students and graduate students advancing in youth-related services, as well as opportunities to earn service learning hours through data entry and semester-long tutoring.
Day of Caring Projects
Days of Caring help to keep our scholar homes safe and comfortable. Depending upon the season, projects may range from cleaning, painting, organizing, landscaping or household repairs.
Collection Drives
Girls Hope welcomes volunteers who prefer to do collection drives to benefit our scholars. This list of The Essentials serves as a guide for collections.
Becoming a Volunteer
Because our scholars have been entrusted to our care by their parents/guardians, Girls Hope carefully screens all community volunteers who have direct contact with our scholars. Criminal background checks and clearances are required.
Please review the Pre-Service Requirements. For more information, contact our Volunteer Coordinator at SMcVeigh@bhgh.org.
